In 2006, Island Health, under the Drinking Water Protection Act, mandated the CRD to design, implement and maintain a cross connection control program for any connections that could put Greater Victoria drinking water at risk.

Annual testing ensures that assemblies are operating as designed to prevent backflow of contaminated water into the drinking water system.

Backflow preventers installed in residential irrigation systems are required to be tested tri-annually (once every three years). All other backflow preventers installed in or at a residential property must be tested annually.
